This past weekend I made a short trip to NYC. It was a brisk chilly afternoon and walking around without a scarf seemed suddenly like a horrible mistake. Luckily as I climbed my way out of the Union Square subway entrance, there was the looming figure of Max Brenner’s Chocolate Shop. As chocolate on the outside as in, the idea of a dark hot chocolate seemed to be the perfect solution to a cold winter day. The store and cafe was packed with people eager to buy chocolate in mass for the gift giving season. Servers were offering free samples of tasty pralines and truffles. My friend and I decided to take the hot chocolates to go because of the long wait to be seated, besides warming your hands against a warm cup of cocoa while strolling the streets of NY isn’t too shabby either. I ordered a dark hot chocolate with marshmallows. What awaited me was the purest chocolaty liquid I had ever tasted. With just the amount of sweetness to not be too cloying, I was reminded of the movie Chocolat during which I spent 90% of the time drooling. I also tried the espresso pralines. They melted in my mouth with hints of espresso and deep hazelnut flavor…mmmm…soooo good. The interesting serveware for these chocolate treats also caught my eye. I instantly fell in love with the hug mug.
Although packed to the rafters with people, this chocolate experience is well worth the pushing and shoving. I definitely will make a stop next time around and hope that this chain makes its way over to Chicago.
